Therapeutic Boarding Schools in Missoula, Montana

Is your teenager spinning out of control? Looking for a therapeutic boarding school near Missoula, Montana?

boarding schoolsThere is nothing worse than having your teen spinning out of control, and no worse feeling than the despair parents experience in the process. It is difficult to know what to do and how to react when your teen daily reaches new lows in disobedience, dishonesty, and disrespect, and chooses the wrong path in life.

We understand, because we went through the same thing with our son. Raised in a Christian home and mostly home-schooled until high school, we suddenly found that we didn’t know him. He had changed seemingly overnight. His academics started falling and his interest in sports and old friends shifted to a new group of friends — the kind parents are wary of — the kind of kids that got kicked out of a public school, so the local private school took them in.

Unbeknownst to us, our son was already heavy into smoking marijuana, sniffing solvents, drinking alcohol and just about everything else his new peer group dared him to do. The downward spiral was dramatic — all the way down to holes-in-the-walls rages, running away for days at a time, and finally threatening suicide. After months in counseling, the therapist proclaimed that there was nothing more he could do. A local boarding school was selected.

Putting our son in a therapeutic boarding school was the hardest thing we’ve ever done as parents. . Worse yet, that program didn’t work out, so we were out a lot of money and still had no solution. We learned from this traumatic experience that therapeutic schools can be quite different and need to be selected based on their strengths and avoided if they have serious weaknesses. It’s important to know what those strengths and weaknesses are.

Some therapeutic boarding schools are great, and others are not so great. Some target one set of issues; others are experts on other issues. But when you call them, they want to fill their beds, so they’ll often present themselves as “experts” in all areas having to do with behavior. But that’s usually not so. Some kids are just going through a rebellious stage, while others are dealing with very serious issues that may not be known to their parents. So choosing a “behavioral modification” program when a “therapeutic” program is what’s needed can be a disaster. It can also be a big waste of money.

No one was available to help us find the right program for our boy. We made a mistake to begin with, and that cost us dearly, but after some time of research we found a good program that was able to help our son. Today, our family and even our son are thankful for that program.

The boarding school we finally enrolled him in literally saved his life and got him off the downward spiral.

Missoula was founded in 1860 and named Hellgate Trading Post while still part of Washington Territory. By 1866, the settlement had moved five miles upstream and renamed Missoula Mills before being shortened to Missoula. The desire for a more convenient water supply to power a lumber and flour mill led to the movement of the settlement to its modern location in 1864.Citation] The mills provided supplies to western settlers traveling along the Mullan Road with Fort Missoula, set up in 1877 to protect the settlers, further stabilizing the economy. The arrival of the Northern Pacific Railway in 1883 was coupled with rapid growth and the maturation of the local lumber industry. An element of prestige could be claimed ten years later when what was already called the City of Missoula was chosen by the Montana Legislature as the site for the new states first university. Along with the U.S. Forest Service headquarters founded in 1908, lumber and the university would remain staples of the local economy for the next hundred years.Citation]http://www.maedc.org/about]
By the 1990s, Missoulas lumber industry had gradually disappeared, and today the citys largest employers are the University of Montana and Missoulas two hospitals. The city is governed by a mayor-council government with twelve city council members, two from each of the six wards. In and around Missoula are Convert of parkland, Convert of trails, and nearly Convert of open-space conservation land with adjacent Mount Jumbo home to grazing elk and mule deer during the winter months. The city is also home to both Montanas largest and its oldest active breweries as well as the Montana Grizzlies, one of the strongest college football programs in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision of the National Collegiate Athletic Association .
