Is your teenager spinning out of control? Looking for a therapeutic boarding school near Teaneck, New Jersey?

boarding schoolsThere is nothing worse than living with a teen spinning out of control, and no worse feeling than the hopelessness parents experience in the process. It is hard to know what to do and how to react when your adolescent daily reaches new lows in disobedience, dishonesty, and disrespect, and chooses badly.

We understand, because we went through it with our son. Raised in a Christian home and mostly home-schooled until high school, we suddenly found that we didn’t know him. He had changed seemingly overnight. His grades started falling and his interest in sports and old friends shifted to a new group of friends — the kind parents are wary of — the kind of kids that got kicked out of a public school, so the local private school took them in.

Unknowingy, our son was already heavy into smoking marijuana, sniffing solvents, drinking alcohol and just about everything else his new peer group dared him to do. The downward spiral was dramatic — all the way down to holes-in-the-walls rages, running away for days at a time, and finally threatening suicide. After months in counseling, the therapist proclaimed that there was nothing more he could do. A local boarding school was selected.

Putting our son in a therapeutic boarding school was the hardest thing we’ve ever done as parents. . Worse yet, that program didn’t work out, so we were out a lot of money and still had no solution. We learned from this traumatic experience that therapeutic programs can be quite different and need to be selected based on their strengths and avoided if they have serious weaknesses. It’s important to know what those strengths and weaknesses are.

Some therapeutic boarding schools are great, and others are not so great. Some target one set of issues; others are experts on other issues. But when you call them, they want to fill their beds, so they’ll often present themselves as “experts” in all areas having to do with behavior. But that’s not always so. Some kids are just going through a rebellious stage, while others are dealing with very serious issues that may not be known to their parents. So choosing a “behavioral modification” program when a “therapeutic” program is what’s needed can be a disaster. It can also be a big waste of money.

No one was offering to help us find the right school for our boy. We made a mistake to begin with, and that cost us dearly, but after some time of research we found a good program that was able to help our son. Today, our family and even our son are thankful for that program.

The school we finally enrolled him in literally saved his life and got him off the downward spiral.

More about Teaneck, New Jersey:

Teaneck is a township in Bergen County, New Jersey, and a suburb in the New York metropolitan area. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township population was 39,776, making it the second-most populous among the 70 municipalities in Bergen County.
Teaneck was created on February 19, 1895 by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature. Teaneck was formed from portions of Englewood Township and Ridgefield Township, both of which are now defunct (despite existing municipalities with similar names), along with portions of Bogota and Leonia.”The Story of New Jersey’s Civil Boundaries: 16061968″, John P. Snyder, Bureau of Geology and Topography; Trenton, New Jersey; 1969. p. 87.] Independence followed the result of a referendum held on January 14, 1895, in which voters favored incorporation by a 467 margin.A Centennial Review of Bergen County Borough Fever 189495: Part 4, accessed January 7, 2007.] To assuage the concerns of Englewood Township’s leaders, the new municipality was formed as a township, rather than succumbing to the borough craze sweeping across Bergen County at the time. On May 3, 1921, and June 1, 1926, portions of what had been Teaneck were transferred to Overpeck Township.Bergen County New Jersey Municipalities, accessed January 7, 2007.]
Teaneck lies at the junction of Interstate 95 and the eastern terminus of Interstate 80. It is bisected into north and south portions by Route 4 and east and west ones by the CSX Transportation River Subdivision. Commercial development is concentrated in four main shopping areas, on Cedar Lane, Teaneck Road, DeGraw Avenue, West Englewood Ave. and Queen Anne Road, more commonly known as “The Plaza”.
Teaneck’s location at the crossroads of river, road, train and other geographical features has made it a site of many momentous events across the centuries. After the American defeat at the Battle of Fort Washington, George Washington and the troops of the Continental Army retreated across New Jersey from the British Army, traveling through Teaneck and crossing the Hackensack River at New Bridge Landing, which has since been turned into a state park and historic site commemorating the events of 1776 and of early colonial life. In 1965, Teaneck became the first community in the nation with a white majority to voluntarily desegregate its public schools, after the Board of Education approved the plan by a 72 vote on May 13, 1964. Teaneck has a diverse population, with large Jewish and African American communities, and growing numbers of Hispanic and Asian residents.
